Who is eligible?

People use cannabis in the context of a wide range of medical conditions and symptoms.  Health Canada lists more than 30 potential indications for the use of dried cannabis in the document entitled Information for Health Care Practitioners.  Some of these include (but are not limited to):

Multiple Sclerosis, Severe Arthritis, Chronic Pain and Nausea, Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Spinal Cord Injury/Disease, Epilepsy, Colitis, Crohn's Disease, other Gastrointestinal Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Muscular Dystrophy, Fibromyalgia, Insomnia, Anxiety & Depression, Migraines, and Muscle Spasms.

Despite this, dried cannabis has not been issued a Notice of Compliance from Health Canada, and is considered an "unrecognized treatment" by the Collège des Médecins.  

HOW DO I GET AN APPOINTMENT?

BY REFERRAL - Santé Cannabis accepts patients primarily on a referral-basis.  This means your treating physician must refer you to our clinic for an assessment.  On this document they must indicate your diagnoses and include a summary of your medical file including a list of current medications.  Once we have received all of this information, an appointment with a Santé Cannabis Physician will be booked.  The referral for consult can be downloaded here.

WITHOUT REFERRAL - Patients who are unable to obtain a referral may submit a summary of their medical file, including a list of current medications.  A physician at Santé Cannabis will review the file and determine whether an appointment should be scheduled. There is a non-refundable $50 fee which applies, as this is an un-insured service.  There are some cases for which we insist on a referral, please contact us for clarification.

What happens next?

1) PHYSICIAN ASSESSMENT

Patients undergo a medical evaluation by a physician to assess their needs and suitability for cannabis or cannabinoids.  If the physician deems it appropriate, cannabis and/or cannabinoids will be prescribed.  Patients are followed up with at a minimum of every 3 months.

2) CANNABIS COUNSELLOR

Patients who are prescribed dried cannabis consult with a cannabis counsellor in order to select a legal cannabis supplier that will best meet their needs.  Our expert counsellors help patients understand cannabis strains and potencies, as well as techniques for transforming dried cannabis into other forms (if medically required).  We help patients maximize the potential benefits of cannabis, and minimize potential risks.  

3) LICENSED PRODUCER

Licensed Producers are currently the only legal sources of dried cannabis for medical purposes, as per the Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations.  Licensed Producers are heavily regulated by Health Canada, and must comply with strict protocols around product quality, security, and accountability.  Licensed Producers are not yet permitted to operate storefronts or distribute cannabis in pharmacies, the medical cannabis is sent to patients by secure courier.

SERVICE FEES, SUPPLIES, AND OTHER COSTS

Medical appointments with a Santé Cannabis physician are free of charge for patients with a valid RAMQ Health Card. If you do not have a valid RAMQ card, additional fees apply.  An annual block fee of $250 covers the provision of uninsured patient support services, which may also be purchased individually.  Some of these services are delivered by Santé Cannabis physicians, and others by staff members.   

The patient who believes that the amounts billed are for services insured under the Health Insurance Act can, within a year of payment, make a written claim for reimbursement to the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec. When it is of the opinion that the amounts billed are not allowed, the Régie reimburses the patients and recovers the same amount from the involved professional or third party.

Preparing for your appointment

After booking your appointment, you will be sent the terms and conditions, a treatment agreement, and a medical history questionnaire.  Please complete these prior to arriving at the clinic. If you are unable to complete them at home, please arrive early to complete the questionaires at the clinic

If you need to cancel your appointment, please contact us as soon as possible. If you miss your appointment or cancel without 48 hours notice, cancellation and missed appointment fees apply.  Our clinic will send you an appointment reminder the day before your scheduled appointment.

What to bring:

Your RAMQ/Health Insurance card 

Payment for clinic fees related to your appointment 

Your medical history questionnaire, terms and conditions, and patient treatment agreement, if they have not already been submitted.

Pharmacy report of current prescription medications, and any additional reports that could assist the medical assessment (if they have not been previously submitted)
